Bob Dylan went full mid-eighties on Empire Burlesque, a glossy, big-drummed 1985 album that pairs his sharp late-night songwriting with the studio sheen of the day.
Produced by Dylan himself, the record gathered a cast that included members of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Ron Wood, and the rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. Dance producer Arthur Baker was brought in to mix it, giving the songs a punchy, radio-ready sound that still divides listeners. Underneath the production, though, sits a strong and varied set of songs.
Tight Connection to My Heart (Has Anyone Seen My Love?) opens with a bouncy, gospel-tinged groove, and When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky is a widescreen, apocalyptic romance. Emotionally Yours slows things into a heartfelt ballad, one of the most openly tender songs he wrote in that decade.
Keen-eared fans have long enjoyed spotting the snatches of classic Hollywood dialogue scattered through the lyrics, a sly bit of magpie wit from a writer who never stopped collecting phrases.
Then comes Dark Eyes, just Dylan, guitar and harmonica, a hushed and haunting closer that strips the gloss away entirely. It is one of his loveliest late-night moments, and it lingers long after the needle lifts.
