Assembled by Columbia in 1973 without Bob Dylan's input, Dylan is one of the oddest entries in his catalog, and one of the most intriguing to revisit.
With Dylan having moved to Asylum Records, the label reached into the vaults and pulled nine outtakes from the Self Portrait and New Morning sessions, recorded in 1969 and 1970 with producer Bob Johnston. Reviews were harsh, and the album stayed off CD in North America for decades. That scarcity, and the sense of hearing something never meant for release, gives it a peculiar charm today.
Every song here is a cover or a traditional tune. Lily of the West opens with a loose, rollicking spirit, and Can't Help Falling in Love finds Dylan earnestly crooning the Elvis favorite. Mr. Bojangles stretches out into a gentle, rambling reading, while Big Yellow Taxi takes Joni Mitchell's environmental lament for a jaunty spin.
The voice is the smooth, warm croon of his Nashville Skyline period, and the backing is relaxed and unfussy, the sound of musicians running through songs they love between more serious work.
Heard now, it plays like a loose, unguarded snapshot of Dylan in transition, a curio for completists that turns out to be far more enjoyable than its reputation suggests.
