Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Volume 3 is due back on double vinyl, gathering two decades of songs from an artist who never stopped reinventing himself.

First compiled in 1994, this third volume picks up where the earlier collections left off, tracing Dylan from the confessional heights of the mid-1970s through his gospel years and the wildly varied records of the 1980s. It also offered something new at the time: Dignity, a song left over from the late-1980s sessions, made its first official appearance here, giving longtime fans a reason to pick it up alongside newcomers looking for a way in.

Tangled Up in Blue opens the set, still one of the greatest storytelling songs ever written, and Hurricane rages against injustice with a violin-driven urgency that never lets up. Knockin' On Heaven's Door brings the collection to a hushed, aching close, and in between the selections leap from the fervor of his born-again years to the moody, late-night textures of his 1980s work, often in surprising and revealing ways.
