Another Side of Bob Dylan is exactly what its title promises, the 1964 record where the voice of the protest movement turned inward and started writing about himself.

Cut in a single night session with producer Tom Wilson, it captures Dylan alone with his guitar, harmonica and the occasional piano, sounding looser and funnier than ever. After The Times They Are a-Changin', fans expected more finger-pointing anthems. Instead he delivered love songs, surreal comedy and a quiet farewell to the earnest songwriter he had been only months before.

My Back Pages is the key, a dense, self-questioning look at his own certainty that the Byrds would later turn into a jangling single. It Ain't Me Babe gently refuses the role of the perfect lover, and many heard a refusal of the spokesman role in it too, while Chimes of Freedom unleashes a torrent of imagery that hints at the electric visions to come. All I Really Want to Do opens the album with a cheeky grin, Dylan clearly enjoying himself as the tape rolls.

It is the hinge between folk Dylan and the electric revolution that followed, and it rewards close, repeated listening. Few records capture an artist changing his mind so openly, or so entertainingly.
