Boards of Canada broke an eight-year silence with Tomorrow's Harvest, a 2013 album that trades sun-bleached nostalgia for something far more unsettling. It sprawls across two LPs, giving its slow-burning atmospheres plenty of room.
The Scottish brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin had not released a full album since The Campfire Headphase, and they announced this one with a trail of cryptic codes and mystery records that sent fans scrambling. The music lived up to the intrigue. Where earlier albums felt like faded home movies, this one plays like the soundtrack to an abandoned research station, all decaying synths, distant drones and a creeping sense that something has gone badly wrong.
"Reach for the Dead" is the centerpiece, a patient build of warm pads and rising drums that slowly curdles into dread. "Cold Earth" settles into a hazy, hypnotic groove, "Palace Posy" stutters along on clipped, wonky rhythms, and "Telepath" adds a layer of eerie, half-heard voices to the gloom.
Seventeen tracks unfold like one continuous mood piece, best heard in a single sitting with the lights down low. It stands among the most cinematic records in the duo's catalog, a dystopian companion to Music Has the Right to Children that rewards deep, late-night listening and repays every return visit.
