Few debut albums have grown into legend quite like Music Has the Right to Children, the 1998 record that made Scottish brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin cult heroes, here on double vinyl with a digital download card.
Recorded between 1995 and 1997 at Hexagon Sun, the duo's own studio in the Pentland Hills, and released jointly by Warp and Skam, it sounded like nothing else in electronic music at the time. Instead of chasing the club, Boards of Canada looked backwards, to warped VHS tapes, faded nature documentaries and half-remembered childhood afternoons, and turned that nostalgia into something quietly unsettling.
"Roygbiv" is the one everyone knows, a short, sweet melody that sounds like it was found on a dusty cassette, while "Turquoise Hexagon Sun" floats on detuned synths and a lazy, head-nodding beat. "Aquarius" bounces on a loping bassline and playful vocal samples, and "Telephasic Workshop" layers chopped vocal fragments into a hypnotic, wobbling haze. Between the longer pieces, tiny interludes drift by like scraps of old film.
Its influence on ambient, downtempo and IDM is impossible to overstate, and a generation of producers learned what analogue warmth and tape wobble could do from these grooves.
On vinyl, the crackle feels less like a format and more like part of the music.
