Blur's The Great Escape returns for its 30th anniversary as a double LP on blue and yellow clear 140g vinyl, bringing back the band's sharpest, most satirical portrait of mid-90s Britain.
Released in 1995, the album followed Parklife at the height of Britpop mania, and the pressure showed in the best way. Damon Albarn's songs became a gallery of bored commuters, lonely suburbanites and city types going quietly mad, set to arrangements even more theatrical and brass-heavy than before. Longtime producer Stephen Street helped shape the band's most ambitious pop record to that point.
"Country House" put Blur at the center of the era's most famous chart rivalry, a jaunty, cheeky single with a bite beneath the grin. "Charmless Man" skewers a social climber with a chorus too catchy to resist, while "Stereotypes" opens the album in full music-hall swagger. Then there is "The Universal", a sweeping, string-drenched ballad that remains one of Albarn's finest moments.
Time has been kind to The Great Escape. Its anxieties about modern life, isolation and consumer comfort feel uncannily current, and Graham Coxon's spiky guitar work keeps the polish from ever turning smooth.
This anniversary edition gives fans a colorful, two-disc way to revisit a defining record of the decade, and to hear how strange a band at its peak could be.
