Blur tore up the Britpop rulebook on 13, the raw, experimental 1999 album that turned heartbreak into something strange and beautiful, here as a double LP.
Their sixth studio album saw the band keep moving away from the chirpy character sketches of their mid-nineties hits toward art rock, electronics and noise. Following the band's self-titled 1997 album, it pushed that record's experimental streak even further. Producer William Orbit, working with them in Reykjavík and London, encouraged loose jams and studio experiments, then sculpted them into songs. Many of Damon Albarn's lyrics were shaped by the end of a long relationship, giving the record an emotional rawness the band had rarely shown before.
Tender opens with a gospel choir and an aching, slow-building plea that swells into a rousing finale. Coffee & TV, sung by guitarist Graham Coxon, is a wry, wistful highlight, while Trimm Trabb crawls from a whisper into a howl. No Distance Left to Run is a weary, devastating ballad that sounds like the morning after everything has fallen apart.
Messy, brave and deeply human, 13 is the sound of a band choosing reinvention over repetition, and it rewards every return visit. Spread across two LPs, its sprawling soundscapes have plenty of room to breathe.
