Blondie's Plastic Letters returns on 180-gram vinyl, the scrappy, sharp-witted second album that turned a New York club band into a British chart sensation.
Released in 1978, it was made in a moment of flux. Bassist Gary Valentine had left before recording began, so Frank Infante was brought in on bass and guitar, with Chris Stein also picking up the bass. Richard Gottehrer was back in the producer's chair for his second and final album with the band, and the sessions at Plaza Sound in New York City kept things lean and punchy.
The big moment is "Denis," a fizzing update of an old doo-wop hit that let Debbie Harry slip between English and French with impossible cool. Valentine's parting gift, "(I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear," is a dreamy, propulsive pop song, while "Youth Nabbed as Sniper" and "Fan Mail" show off the band's spikier side.
Jimmy Destri's keyboards add a B-movie glow throughout, and Harry's voice moves easily from sneer to swoon. You can hear the pop instincts that would take over on Parallel Lines, but here they still come wrapped in leather and attitude.
For collectors filling in the Blondie story, this heavyweight pressing is the essential missing link between the debut and the blockbuster that followed.
