Blonde Redhead returned from a nine-year silence with Sit Down for Dinner, a 2023 album that swaps their old tension for something warmer, wiser and quietly devastating.
Writing began in 2018, and as the songs slowly came together, Kazu Makino and twins Amedeo and Simone Pace found themselves circling aging, death and mourning. Makino has pointed to Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking as a guiding influence, and that sense of grief folded into everyday life runs through the whole record. The trio produced it themselves, and it was their first full-length since Barragán in 2014.
The songs are elegant and unhurried, built on interlocking guitars and gentle, insistent rhythms. "Snowman," sung by Amedeo, opens the album with a soft, rolling glide, while "Kiss Her Kiss Her" lets Makino's airy voice slice through a dense arrangement that swells into synth-pop shimmer. The two-part title track sits at the heart of the record, and "Melody Experiment" finds the band at their most playful, toying with rhythm and texture.
It is a mature, generous album from a band that has never repeated itself, and perhaps the most welcoming record in their catalog. Pour a glass of wine, set the table for two and let it play all the way through.
