We Sold Our Soul for Rock 'n' Roll appeared in the mid-seventies, after six studio albums had already rewritten the rules of hard rock. Drawing heavily on the first four records, it traces the Birmingham quartet from the doom-laden thunder of their debut through the studio ambition of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage, making it a near-perfect primer on how heavy metal was born.

Tony Iommi's riffs do most of the talking. "Paranoid" is under three minutes of pure adrenaline, and "Iron Man" lumbers forward on one of the most recognizable guitar figures ever recorded. "War Pigs" sets Ozzy's wail against Geezer Butler's anti-war lyrics and Bill Ward's swinging, jazz-schooled drumming, while "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" shows the band reaching for something grander, with crushing heaviness giving way to sudden, eerie calm.
