Tyr returns in a 2024 remaster, giving one of Black Sabbath's most overlooked chapters a long-overdue second hearing on vinyl.
Released in 1990, the album belongs to the Tony Martin era, when Tony Iommi steered the band through a run of records that spent decades out of print. Iommi co-produced with drummer Cozy Powell, with Neil Murray on bass and Geoff Nicholls on keyboards, and the sessions took in Rockfield Studios in Wales. The 2024 reissue campaign finally brought this period back into the light.
Lyrically, the record swaps the devilish imagery of its predecessor for Norse gods and Viking lore, and the runes on the cover come from an ancient Swedish runestone. "Anno Mundi" opens with an ominous, choral build before Iommi's riff comes crashing in, while "The Law Maker" charges forward at a harder, faster clip. The second side links its Norse-themed songs into one dramatic sequence that peaks with "Valhalla," and the single "Feels Good to Me" offers a big, melodic power ballad.
Martin's soaring, operatic voice and Powell's huge drum sound give the whole thing a widescreen heft quite unlike the Ozzy or Dio years.
For Sabbath completists and lovers of classic heavy metal, it is a buried treasure finally back where it belongs.
