Black Pumas' Live From Brooklyn Paramount captures the Austin psychedelic soul band in full flight, recorded in the summer of 2024 and pressed on two colored LPs.
Singer Eric Burton and guitarist and producer Adrian Quesada built their name as much on stage as on record, becoming the first band to sell out four straight nights at Stubb's in their hometown. By the time they reached the Brooklyn Paramount, midway through a busy summer tour, they had two albums to draw from, their acclaimed self-titled debut and 2023's Chronicles of a Diamond. The set mixes both, letting songs breathe in a way only a crowd can coax out of a band.
Burton is the magnetic centre, his voice moving easily between smooth croon and full-throated gospel fire. Colors, the breakout song that topped adult alternative radio, sits alongside newer material such as More Than a Love Song and Chronicles of a Diamond, while Quesada's guitar threads vintage soul and psychedelic colour through the arrangements. Their cover of Tracy Chapman's Fast Car, a song they have performed on late-night television, earns its place in the set.
Two discs give the longer jams plenty of room to stretch.
For fans who only know the studio versions, this is clear proof of a reputation built night after night on stage.
