Johnny Franck's Bilmuri revs past genre speed limits on AMERICAN MOTOR SPORTS, and this 420CC Edition puts the 2024 album and its bonus tracks on clear red vinyl.
Franck started Bilmuri as a solo project in Ohio in 2016 and released a long run of records before this one arrived through Columbia. His sound is a glorious collision of post-hardcore heft and neon pop-punk, shot through with emo heartache and indie-pop sweetness, often inside one song, and his sense of humour is never far from the surface. Here, that mix sounds bigger and more confident than ever.
"Emptyhanded" and "Boutta Cashew" show off his knack for pairing crunching guitars with sticky, oddball hooks, proving a ridiculous title can come attached to a seriously good song. "2016 Cavaliers (Ohio)", with Knox, wears its home-state pride right there in the title, and "Talkin' 2 Ur Ghost" lets the more emotional side of the record take the wheel.
It is the kind of album that can make you grin and headbang within the space of a single side.
The expanded 420CC Edition rounds out the story with extra songs, a fitting victory lap for an album that turned a cult favourite into one of heavy music's most fun voices.
