So Much For Goodbyes is the most personal record Billy Strings has made, a 2026 album of sixteen songs spread across two LPs.

Grief runs through it. The album was shaped by the death of his mother, Debra, in 2025, and her presence is everywhere, from the unfinished painting of hers used as the cover art to the closing "Debra's Waltz". Strings produced it with T Bone Burnett, recording mostly at Nashville's Sound Emporium with his road-tested band of Billy Failing, Royal Masat, Jarrod Walker and Alex Hargreaves.

Lead single "Burn the Other End" is darker and slower than his usual fireworks, built around a haunting guitar melody rather than raw speed. "Lucid Daydream" pushes bluegrass toward prog rock, and "Bluewater Breakdown" lets the whole band cut loose in the kind of high-wire picking that has made his live shows legendary.

Guest harmonies from Alison Krauss, Del McCoury and Jack White add warmth around the edges, yet the record never loses its intimacy. Gospel, country rock and even a touch of funk drift through the arrangements, held together by Strings' clear, grieving voice.

It is a big, generous record that honours bluegrass tradition while refusing to be boxed in by it, and it stands among the most moving work of his career.
