Billy Strings is at his most electrifying in front of a crowd, and Live Vol. 1 captures that fire across two 180-gram LPs of fearless, high-wire picking.
Released in 2024 as his first official live album, it was recorded at shows between 2023 and early 2024, from the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville to La Cigale in Paris. Strings produced it himself, and it went on to win the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album. Behind him are Billy Failing on banjo, Alex Hargreaves on fiddle, Royal Masat on bass and Jarrod Walker on mandolin, a crew that turns every song into a lively conversation between friends who know each other's next move.
Away from the Mire stretches past thirteen minutes of soaring, quicksilver improvisation, and Fire Line flows into the traditional Reuben's Train for a medley that wanders from front-porch tradition into psychedelic territory and back again. Turmoil & Tinfoil unfurls into an extended jam that shows just how far these players can travel and still land together, with Strings' guitar darting through every gap.
It's bluegrass with jam-band lungs, rooted in tradition but restless at heart, and it catches a band in full flight. Put it on loud and you can almost feel the crowd breathing along with every run and break.
