Born in Trinidad and raised in London, Billy Ocean first broke through in the 1970s with soul-pop singles that owed as much to Motown as to the disco boom. Love Really Hurts Without You comes from that early run, all stomping rhythm and big, aching melody. Then came the 1980s, and a second act that made him one of the decade's most dependable hitmakers on both sides of the Atlantic.
Side one is a near-perfect sequence. When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going, the theme from The Jewel of the Nile, kicks things off in high spirits, and the turbo-charged Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car sounds like a car chase set to a drum machine. Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run), the song that won him a Grammy, shimmers with synth-funk confidence, and the slow-dance ballads scattered across both sides give the party a chance to catch its breath.
What ties it all together is that voice: warm, elastic and irrepressibly upbeat even when the lyrics are falling apart. Ten songs, no dead weight, and a fine case for keeping this one within arm's reach.
