Billy Idol sneered his way into the big time with Rebel Yell, the 1983 album where punk attitude met synth-driven, leather-clad rock.
His second studio album reunited him with producer Keith Forsey and guitarist Steve Stevens, the partnership that shaped his sound, with sessions at Electric Lady Studios in New York. Drummer Thommy Price was brought in for several songs, adding extra muscle to the rhythm section. The title came from a brand of bourbon he drank at a party with the Rolling Stones, which tells you plenty about the mood. The result fused the energy of his Generation X days with gleaming production built for MTV and arena stages.
The title track explodes with Stevens' squealing guitar and a chorus made for shouting, while Eyes Without a Face slows down into a haunting, moonlit ballad. Flesh for Fantasy struts with dark, sensual menace, and Catch My Fall adds a soaring, wistful hook that shows the songwriter beneath the spiky hair. Every track pairs New York polish with a street-level snarl.
Rebel Yell is pure eighties swagger with real songs underneath the hairspray, the kind of record that sounds best on a long night drive. Decades on, it still makes a strong case that Idol had the coolest sneer on the radio.
