Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions brings Billy Bragg and Wilco's Woody Guthrie project together in one box set, with seven LPs, a bonus 7-inch and a booklet.

The story began when Nora Guthrie invited Bragg to set music to a trove of her father's lyrics that had never been recorded. Bragg brought Wilco into the sessions, and the collaboration produced three volumes released over the years that followed. This set gathers all of them, and adds 16 previously unreleased recordings from the original sessions, including demos, alternate versions and live performances.

The songs remain the heart of it. "California Stars," sung by Jeff Tweedy, turned a long-lost Guthrie lyric into one of the most loved songs either act has recorded, and "Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key" shows Bragg at his most tender. Natalie Merchant brings a gentle grace to "Birds And Ships." The bonus 7-inch is something special on its own, carrying a newly discovered 1951 home recording of Guthrie himself singing "Hesitating Beauty."

Hearing Guthrie's own voice alongside these reimaginings closes a circle that has been open for decades.

For fans of either act, this box is the complete picture: songs left behind by one of America's great songwriters, finished decades later by two of his most devoted heirs and finally gathered under one roof.
