Billie Eilish's debut EP dont smile at me lands here as a limited clear vinyl UK import, the 2017 release that introduced a Los Angeles teenager whispering her way into the mainstream.
It all started with Ocean Eyes, a song her brother Finneas O'Connell originally wrote for his own band, which Billie recorded and shared online in 2015. Its slow-burn spread turned their family-home studio into one of the most talked-about rooms in pop, and this EP gathered that early run of singles into one moody, cohesive statement.
Finneas produced the set, and the sibling chemistry is already uncanny. Bellyache pairs a breezy acoustic strum with a darkly comic confession of guilt, while Idontwannabeyouanymore drifts in on jazzy chords and a vocal so close it feels like it is inside your headphones. Copycat snaps back with a sneer and a skittering, bass-heavy beat.
What stands out now is how fully formed the aesthetic was from the start: the hushed delivery, the gallows humor, the refusal to sound like anybody else. Everything that followed, from the stadium tours to the record-breaking albums, can be traced back to these songs.
On clear vinyl, the EP looks as ghostly as it sounds, a fitting home for the record that opened the door.
