Bill Withers made friendship and heartbreak sound effortless on Still Bill, his 1972 second album, here on limited 180-gram green vinyl imported from Holland.

After the breakthrough of his debut, Withers shared production duties with the musicians who played on the record: keyboardist and arranger Ray Jackson, guitarist Benorce Blackmon, bassist Melvin Dunlap and drummer James Gadson. Recorded at the Record Plant in Los Angeles, it has the relaxed, conversational feel of a band that knew exactly when to lean in and when to leave space.

Lean on Me is the song everyone knows, a gospel-tinged promise of support that topped the charts and has never really left the air since. Use Me struts on a clipped, funky groove and one of the slyest lyrics in soul, and Who Is He (And What Is He to You)? simmers with suspicion over a taut, insistent rhythm. Kissing My Love shows off Gadson's drumming at its crispest.

Withers had a rare gift for saying profound things in plain language, and his warm, grainy voice sells every line without strain or showiness.

Still Bill remains one of the defining soul albums of the early 1970s, as comforting now as it was then, and this green pressing is a handsome way to keep it in heavy rotation.
