Naked & Warm finds Bill Withers in mid-seventies Los Angeles, loosening his collar and sinking into a slinkier, after-hours groove, due on limited blue 180 gram vinyl as a Holland import.

Released in 1976, this was Withers' second album for Columbia, and he produced it himself at the Record Plant. Commercially it slipped by quietly, overshadowed by the classics that came before it, but that has only made it a favorite secret among soul diggers. Freed from the expectations of the hit parade, Withers stretched out, letting his band ride long grooves while he sang with the conversational ease that made him one of soul's great storytellers.

"Close to Me" opens with a gentle, intimate plea, and the single "If I Didn't Mean You Well" shows he could still write a tune with a hook. "Dreams" lets the band settle into a mellow groove, and the epic "City of the Angels" runs past ten minutes, a slow-burning portrait of the city he called home. Harpist Dorothy Ashby adds shimmering color to the arrangements, giving the record a dreamy, jazz-touched sheen that sets it apart from his earlier, earthier work.

Withers rarely sounded more relaxed or sensual, and it makes a perfect late-night record for listeners who already know the hits and want to hear where he went next.
