Sunday at the Village Vanguard is one of jazz's great live records, and it returns here as part of the Original Jazz Classics series.

Recorded at the famous New York club in 1961 with Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums, it captures a trio that had redefined how piano, bass and drums could talk to one another. Instead of a pianist with accompaniment, this was a genuine three-way conversation, with each player free to lead. Tragically, LaFaro died in a car accident just days after these sets, and producer Orrin Keepnews and Evans chose performances that put his playing front and center.

LaFaro's own "Gloria's Step" opens the album with a bass line that sings as freely as any melody, and "Jade Visions," also his composition, closes it in hushed, almost spectral reflection. In between, the trio stretch out on Gershwin's "My Man's Gone Now" with aching patience and turn Miles Davis's "Solar" into a nimble, shape-shifting exchange.

The murmur of the room drifts in around the edges, which only makes the music feel more intimate, as if you have the best table in the house on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

Evans later considered this his finest trio, and listening now, it is easy to understand why.
