Bill Evans' California Here I Come captures his trio in full flight at the Village Vanguard in 1967, now presented as a 180-gram double LP in the Verve Vault Series.

The recordings come from two nights at the famous Greenwich Village club, six years after the celebrated sets that produced Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby. This time Evans had Eddie Gómez on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, a partner from his late-1950s records whose crisp, swinging drive pushes the pianist somewhere bolder and more extroverted. The tapes stayed on the shelf until 1982, two years after Evans' death, when they finally appeared as a double album.

Fifteen performances fill four sides. The title track kicks off with a bright, buoyant bounce, and Stella by Starlight unfolds with Evans' trademark harmonic richness. His own compositions Very Early and Turn Out the Stars show the composer at his most quietly beautiful, while Gómez, still fairly new to the chair, already plays with the agility and conversational spark that would define their long partnership.

Less famous than the 1961 Vanguard recordings but every bit as rewarding, it is a key piece of the Evans story. Dropping the needle feels like grabbing a table near the bandstand on a very good night.
