Big Thief's debut album Masterpiece introduced Adrianne Lenker's extraordinary songwriting to the world, and its title still reads less like a boast than a dare.

Released in 2016, the record was produced by Andrew Sarlo, with additional production from James Krivchenia, who would later join the band on drums. Lenker, guitarist Buck Meek, bassist Max Oleartchik and drummer Jason Burger already sound locked into the push and pull that would make them one of the most celebrated indie groups of the decade.

The title track Masterpiece is a ragged, tender rock song about love and memory that builds to a cathartic finish, while Paul offers one of Lenker's most devastating portraits of a past relationship over gently chiming guitars. Real Love takes a sharp left turn, erupting into a howling, distorted guitar break that feels like a dam bursting.

What makes it special is the contrast between lyrics so intimate they border on uncomfortable and a band that can turn from whisper to roar without warning. Lenker's voice cracks and soars in all the right places, and nothing ever feels polished for the sake of it.

For anyone who came to Big Thief through their later records, this is where the story starts, and it holds up beautifully on vinyl.
