Big L's Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous is the 1995 debut where Harlem's sharpest punchline artist emptied his whole notebook onto wax.
Lamont Coleman came up as part of the Diggin' in the Crates crew alongside mentor Lord Finesse, and by the time Columbia released this album his freestyle reputation was already legend on New York's underground circuit. It never became a mainstream smash, but rap heads passed it around like scripture. After his death in 1999, the album only grew in stature, now widely regarded as one of the purest lyrical showcases of mid-nineties East Coast rap.
The beats are dusty, soulful boom-bap, all thick drums and warm loops, leaving plenty of room for L to show off. "Put It On" is the swaggering anthem, a head-nodder built for block parties, while "MVP" glides over a smooth, sweet groove that belies how ruthless the bars are. "Street Struck" turns reflective, a cautionary tale about the pull of the corner, and "Danger Zone" leans into horror-flick menace with a grin.
Every verse is packed with wordplay that rewards a second, third and tenth listen.
Pressed on 140-gram vinyl, it belongs on any serious nineties hip hop shelf, a reminder of how much talent was lost far too soon.
