Colors_LIVE captures Between the Buried and Me playing their 2007 opus Colors from start to finish, and this 2LP set brings it back on green vinyl.
Recorded at Rocketown in Nashville in 2008, the show caught the North Carolina band at the moment their reputation exploded. Colors had stitched death metal, prog, jazz and even bluegrass into a single, hour-long suite, and pulling it off live seemed close to impossible. Tommy Giles Rogers Jr., Paul Waggoner, Dustie Waring, Dan Briggs and Blake Richardson did it anyway, with Jamie King handling production and the mix, and every twist of the album survives the trip to the stage.
Every transition lands. Foam Born (A) The Backtrack opens with that familiar piano-and-voice calm before the storm, and (B) The Decade of Statues blows the doors off right on cue. Ants of the Sky lurches from crushing riffs to a hoedown and back again without missing a beat, and the closing White Walls stretches past fifteen minutes into one of the most cathartic finales in modern metal, and the crowd is right there with them.
For progressive metal devotees, this is a band at full, fearless power. It is also a reminder of how wild this music sounds in a room full of people.
