I Love the Way You Love is the album that made Betty Wright a soul star before she had even turned 20, reissued here as part of the Rhino Reserve series.
Released in 1972 on Miami's Alston label, it was built around "Clean Up Woman," the knowing, irresistible single that climbed to number six on the Billboard Hot 100, reached number two on the R&B chart and earned a gold record. Written and produced by Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke, the song rides one of the most famous guitar licks in soul, played by Willie "Little Beaver" Hale, and it became a cornerstone of the Miami soul sound.
The rest of the album shows how much range Wright had at such a young age. The title track "I Love the Way You Love" puts her bright, assured voice front and centre, and her take on Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine," then a brand-new song, shows she could make a fresh standard her own.
Her voice is the star throughout, sure of itself with a wink in every line, and the rhythm section keeps everything moving with easy Southern grace.
For soul collectors, this is a gem of early-70s R&B, and proof that Betty Wright was the real deal from the very start.
