Benny Carter's Further Definitions joins the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series on 180-gram vinyl, giving one of the great saxophone records of the 1960s the care it deserves.
Recorded in 1961 and released by Impulse! in 1962, it reunited Carter with Coleman Hawkins, his partner on a celebrated 1937 Paris session, and surrounded them with Phil Woods and Charlie Rouse to form a four-horn front line. Dick Katz, John Collins, Jimmy Garrison and Jo Jones handle the rhythm with quiet authority.
Carter's arrangements are the real star, written with an architect's precision yet leaving room for each horn to speak. Honeysuckle Rose and Crazy Rhythm revisit tunes from that 1937 date with fresh harmonies, while Body and Soul gives Hawkins another turn at the ballad he made his own. Cotton Tail swings hard, the saxophones locking together like a small big band.
The interplay between the two altos and two tenors is the joy here, with Carter's silky tone, Woods' bright bite, Rouse's angular wit and Hawkins' great, burnished sound all clearly distinct within the ensemble.
A swing-era master looking forward rather than back, Further Definitions is essential for saxophone lovers and anyone who prizes great arranging, and this 180-gram pressing makes a fine home for it.
