Soulville might be the most purely comforting record in the Verve catalog, a late-night conversation between Ben Webster's tenor saxophone and a rhythm section that knew exactly when to listen.
Released in 1957, it paired the former Duke Ellington star with the Oscar Peterson Trio of Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown, plus drummer Stan Levey, under the watchful eye of producer Norman Granz. Webster was well past his swing-era fame by then, and he sounds completely at ease, a master with nothing left to prove and every reason to take his time.
The title track "Soulville" sets the mood, a slow blues that lets his breathy, vibrato-rich tone fill every corner of the room. "Makin' Whoopee" gets a wry, gently swinging reading, and "Late Date" keeps the late-hours atmosphere glowing. The ballads are where the magic happens, and "Where Are You?" shows how Webster could make a single held note sound like a whole confession.
Peterson and Ellis add sparkle without ever crowding the leader, and the whole session breathes like a club set after the tourists have gone home. For anyone building a jazz shelf around warmth rather than fireworks, Soulville is a cornerstone, and nearly seven decades later it has never lost its glow.
