The Turning is Bask's fourth album, Appalachian Americana pushed into genuinely heavy, cosmic territory, finished in Asheville just weeks before Hurricane Helene tore through the band's hometown.
The North Carolina band has spent their career straddling a strange but genuinely compelling divide, country and folk textures native to their region colliding with post-rock's patience and psychedelic rock's heaviness, never quite settling into either camp. This record pushes that fusion further than anything they'd attempted before, and the timing of its completion gives it an unintended weight, a record about grounding and natural forces finished right before the region it's steeped in absorbed a genuine natural disaster.
Chasm opens the album as a brief, tense overture before the record properly unfolds. Unwound stretches past seven minutes, the clearest showcase of the band's post-rock patience colliding with real heaviness. Long Lost Light carries the record's most atmospheric, searching stretch, and the title track closes things at over six minutes, cosmic and country pulling against each other right up until the end.
Heavy Americana that earns both halves of that description completely. This deluxe gatefold pressing arrived carrying more weight than the band could have anticipated when they finished tracking it.
