Basement's Colourmeinkindness lands on colored vinyl: the Ipswich band's fuzzy, heart-on-sleeve second album, and the record that eventually handed them a second life.
Recorded in 2012 with producer Sam Pura at The Panda Studios in California, it came together in a scramble, with members swapping parts over email and finishing songs in the studio into the small hours. Days after the album was announced, the band revealed they were going on hiatus, so its release arrived with a bittersweet full stop attached. Years later, "Covet" found a whole new audience online and helped coax the group back together.
The sound sits somewhere between nineties alternative rock and emo, all thick, distorted guitars and melodies that ache rather than shout. "Whole" opens proceedings with bruised urgency, "Covet" rolls along on a hazy riff and a hook that refuses to leave, and "Spoiled" and "Bad Apple" keep the tension simmering. Andrew Fisher's voice carries real weight throughout, raw without ever losing its tune, while the rhythm section keeps everything tightly coiled.
At just ten songs, it is short enough to play twice in a row, which is exactly what most people end up doing. A cult favorite that never stopped finding new listeners, and a fine reason to dig out the headphones again.
