Band of Horses' Cease to Begin trades big-city reverb for front-porch warmth, a 2007 second album that sharpened everything fans loved about their debut.

After that first record, Ben Bridwell found himself rebuilding the group, with several founding members gone and new faces stepping in. Rather than retreat, he leaned into a looser, more down-home feel. Producer Phil Ek returned and recorded the band at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, North Carolina, giving the songs a big, open, room-filling sound with plenty of space around every guitar.

Opener "Is There A Ghost" starts with a whisper and erupts into one of the great indie-rock crescendos of its decade. "No One's Gonna Love You" is a tender, slow-dance ballad that became a lasting fan favourite, while "The General Specific" swings with a hand-clapping, gospel-tinged stomp and "Ode To LRC" surges on chiming, reverb-soaked guitars.

Bridwell's high, keening voice ties it all together, carrying Southern melancholy and wide-eyed hope in equal measure. Even at its loudest, the album feels intimate, like a late-night conversation turned up to stadium volume.

At ten songs and a tidy running time, it is an easy record to flip again and again, and it remains a high point of the mid-2000s indie boom.
