BADBADNOTGOOD built Mid Spiral in three parts, Chaos, Order and Growth, released through 2024 and gathered here as a complete double LP.
The Toronto group, now the trio of Chester Hansen, Alexander Sowinski and Leland Whitty, began as jazz students reworking hip-hop beats and grew into one of the most in-demand instrumental bands around, collaborating with a long list of rap and R&B names. Mid Spiral follows Talk Memory and keeps the focus on the three of them and their interplay. The band were clear that this is an album rather than a set of EPs, and heard in full the three suites flow as one long arc.
Eyes On Me sets the tone, unhurried and hypnotic, and Take Me With You keeps the mood loose and warm. Last Laugh tightens the screws with a busier, more propulsive feel, while Sétima Regra shows how comfortably the band move between moods without ever losing the thread.
Throughout, Whitty's saxophone and flute float over Hansen's bass and Sowinski's drums, with plenty of space for improvisation and careful studio texture. It is music that rewards close attention but works just as well drifting in the background late at night.
For fans of spiritual jazz and beat culture, this 2LP is a rich, absorbing set from a band still exploring.
