How Could Hell Be Any Worse? is where Bad Religion began, a 1982 debut full of teenage fury and surprisingly sharp ideas from suburban Los Angeles.

Guitarist Brett Gurewitz had started Epitaph Records to put out the band's music, and this album became one of the label's earliest releases. Recorded at Track Record Studios in North Hollywood and produced by the band themselves, it captures Greg Graffin and company before the polish of later years, playing fast and loud but far more thoughtfully than most of their hardcore peers, with lyrics already wrestling with big questions.

Opener "We're Only Gonna Die" lays out the band's worldview in about two minutes, a blistering meditation on human self-destruction. "Latch Key Kids" sneers at suburban neglect with scrappy energy, "Part III" barrels forward on pure momentum, and "In the Night", the longest track here, stretches out into darker, moodier territory.

The recording is rough around the edges in the best possible way, all buzzing guitars and urgent shouts, and the seeds of the band's later melodic hardcore are already visible. For fans who know the classics that followed, this is the foundation everything else was built on, and it still sounds wonderfully defiant more than four decades later.
