I Against I is Bad Brains at their most ambitious, the 1986 album that broke hardcore's rules, reissued here on green vinyl.

The Washington, D.C. band had already rewritten punk's speed limit, but this third album pushed much further, folding funk, soul and heavy metal into their attack while keeping every ounce of hardcore intensity. Produced by Ron Saint Germain, it remains the best-selling record in their catalog, and its influence ran straight through the alternative metal and funk-rock bands of the following decade.

The title track is a masterclass in controlled chaos, Dr. Know's guitar ripping through a riff as precise as it is ferocious, while H.R. switches between snarl and soar in a heartbeat. "House Of Suffering" thunders along at breakneck pace, "Re-Ignition" rides a fierce, funky groove, and "Sacred Love" carries one of rock's great backstories, with H.R.'s vocals recorded over the phone from prison.

Darryl Jenifer's elastic bass and Earl Hudson's drumming hold the whole thing together with astonishing tightness, shifting gears mid-song without ever dropping the thread.

Decades later, it still sounds like a band refusing to be boxed in, and this reissue keeps one of the eighties' most important rock records spinning where it belongs, loud and often.
