Two years after her debut, Avril Lavigne traded skater-girl sparkle for something darker and heavier, and Under My Skin still sounds like a rite of passage for anyone who grew up with it.
Released in 2004 as her second studio album, it was written largely with Chantal Kreviazuk, who invited Lavigne to record at the Malibu home studio she shared with her husband Raine Maida. Maida, Don Gilmore and Butch Walker handled production, steering her toward a moodier, guitar-heavy sound. It was her second and final studio album for Arista, and it made clear she was steering her own ship. Many now hear it as a blueprint for the emo-leaning pop that followed later in the decade.
"Take Me Away" opens the record with restless urgency, "Don't Tell Me" is a defiant, crunching statement of self-respect, and "Nobody's Home" broods over loneliness and a girl with nowhere to belong. "My Happy Ending" then turns a breakup into an explosive singalong that still gets shouted word for word at parties and karaoke nights alike.
Raw and unafraid, it is the album that proved Lavigne was far more than a one-album wonder, and it has aged into a fan-favorite classic. Pull it out for a dose of 2000s angst and keep the volume high.
