Avril Lavigne arrived in 2002 with Let Go, a debut that handed a generation of skater kids and bedroom guitarists a brand new kind of pop star.

Released on Arista, the album pairs her with producers The Matrix, Clif Magness, Curt Frasca and Peter Zizzo. Lavigne was still a teenager from small-town Ontario when it landed, and her unfiltered mix of pop polish, crunchy guitars and eye-rolling attitude set her apart from the glossier stars of the moment.

"Complicated" was the breakthrough, a wry, acoustic-led complaint about people who put on an act. "Sk8er Boi" turned a high school snub into a punky, shout-along tale with a satisfying twist, while "I'm With You" revealed a soaring, aching ballad voice that surprised plenty of listeners.

"Losing Grip" opens the album with a moody crunch, setting up thirteen songs that swing between angsty rock and heart-on-sleeve confession. Her lyrics are direct and conversational, the hooks are relentless, and the guitars are loud enough to annoy a parent or two.

More than two decades later, the influence of Let Go is easy to hear across pop-punk and alt-pop, and these songs still trigger instant, word-perfect sing-alongs from anyone who grew up with them blasting from a stereo.
