Avenged Sevenfold's City of Evil gets the 180-gram double vinyl treatment, a fitting home for the record where the Huntington Beach band swapped screams for full-throated heavy metal ambition.
Released in 2005, their third album was a deliberate break from the metalcore of their early work. M. Shadows spent months with a vocal coach building a cleaner singing voice that still had grit, and the band leaned hard into twin-guitar harmonies and songs that run long without apology. Co-producer Andrew Murdock helped shape that bigger, more classic sound.
"Bat Country" is the calling card, a breakneck ride with a nod to Hunter S. Thompson and a hook built for arenas. Opener "Beast and the Harlot" sets the tone, with Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance trading lightning-fast leads over a relentless double kick, while "Seize the Day" slows down into a power ballad with genuine heart. "Burn It Down" keeps the aggression simmering.
The Rev's drumming deserves its own mention. He pushed his pedal speed to punishing levels for these sessions, and that stamina drives the whole record from front to back, even through its most elaborate detours.
City of Evil went on to become the band's best-selling album and the point where they stopped sounding like their influences. Across four sides, the long songs finally have room to breathe.
