Ava Luna's self-titled record strips a nearly two-decade-old band down to drums, bass, and two voices, and finds that's all it ever really needed, pressed here on grape vinyl.

The Brooklyn group started in Carlos Hernandez's high school bedroom, and this 2025 album, released after founding member Kye departed in 2019, is a deliberate retreat from Moon 2's cosmic sprawl back toward something earthbound and specific to their own city. Julian Fader's drums and Ethan Bassford's bass do the actual foundational work here, close to the ground and built to hold up before any other layer gets added, while Carlos and Felicia Douglass's voices stop functioning as lead and backup entirely, weaving instead into something closer to a single instrument. Larry McDonald, who played percussion for Gil Scott-Heron, joins throughout, and Julian's Soul Coughing influence surfaces in scattered crude samples across the record.

Lasting Impression captures the exact exhaustion of a job that's worn you down. Archive fragments Carlos and Felicia's vocals in and out of sync, mirroring its own subject matter. My Walk traces an actual route between two members' apartments, half a dozen languages drifting through as it moves from Flatbush to Sunset Park, and Your Man delivers the record's rawest confrontation.

Almost twenty years of shared instinct, distilled down to its barest elements. It sounds like exactly what it is, hard-won.
