Riding High in Texas marks fifty years since Asleep at the Wheel relocated to Austin on Willie Nelson's own suggestion, ten songs that celebrate the state their entire career has been built around.
Ray Benson formed the band in West Virginia in 1970 with a mission that felt almost quixotic at the time, reviving Western swing during an era when most people had forgotten Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys ever dominated American ballrooms. That move to Texas in 1973 turned Asleep at the Wheel into a genuine institution, and this record, gathering songs from writers as varied as Jimmie Rodgers, Guy Clark, and Charlie Daniels, reads as both victory lap and love letter, half a century into the exact mission Benson set out on as a young man.
The title track brings in Billy Strings for a genuinely propulsive collaboration between generations of roots musicians. Long Tall Texan features Lyle Lovett trading verses with real chemistry, both artists clearly enjoying themselves. T for Texas revisits Jimmie Rodgers' blue yodel tradition with the band's signature swing feel intact, and Beaumont Rag closes the record on pure instrumental showmanship, the kind of playing that made this band's live reputation in the first place.
Fifty years of keeping Western swing alive when almost nobody else bothered. This is the sound of that mission still paying off completely.
