Armored Choir...And More! marks 35 years since Arsenal put out one of Christian rock's genuinely underrated records, now remastered and expanded on a limited run of 200 hot pink copies, the first time it's ever touched vinyl.
Florida's Arsenal made their name on the strength of one thing above everything else: Christine Steel's voice, which stood out immediately in a late 1980s Christian metal scene that offered very few female-fronted bands at that level. Guitarist Kevin Pike, who joined shortly after this 1990 debut and stuck around for three decades, has been blunt about it himself, guitarists and drummers are replaceable, Steel's voice is the actual band. Roxx Records has licensed the material properly from Regancy Records and Christine Steel herself, with new mastering from Rob Colwell and fresh artwork from Scott Waters, and this edition folds in the unreleased follow-up sessions the band cut for Regancy along with material from Steel's work with Stryper's Timothy Gaines.
Armored Choir, the title track, is where Steel's range gets the clearest showcase, powerful without tipping into showy. Someone Believes in You carries the album's most direct message with real conviction, and Bishop of Souls leans harder into the metal side of the band's sound than almost anything else here.
Three original members, one voice that made the whole thing work, and a record that's waited 35 years to get the pressing it deserved.
