Blue Fear is the 1997 track that put Armin van Buuren on the map, and this 140-gram black vinyl 12-inch gathers four versions of the trance classic, pressed as a Holland import.

Long before the radio show, the residencies and the festival headline slots made him one of dance music's best-known names, a young Dutch producer released a dark, driving track that became his first hit and a staple of late-90s trance sets. It still carries the thrill of a scene finding its feet and its sound.

Side one opens with Blue Fear (Original Extended), hypnotic and patient, built for the long mix. It is followed by an exclusive, previously unreleased remix from progressive house heavyweights John Digweed and Nick Muir, a fresh take from two figures who helped shape the sound of that era in clubs around the world.

Flip it over for Blue Fear (Ørjan Nilsen Remix), first released in 2011, and Blue Fear (Eelke Kleijn Extended Night Mix), which brings the record to a close in style.

Four interpretations of one tune might sound like a niche idea, but that is exactly the appeal for DJs and collectors tracing trance from its roots to the present day, all on one sturdy slab of wax.
