One winter night in Denver, one band at full throttle: Live in Denver, January 17, 1980 catches April Wine mid-tour, remastered and spread across two limited red LPs.
By the start of the eighties, Myles Goodwin's Canadian hard rockers had become a serious draw south of the border, touring hard behind Harder... Faster and building the momentum that would carry them into their biggest years. This show captures the band in that window, three guitars wide and playing to an American crowd hungry for volume.
The set opens with "Oowatanite," a riff that hits like a revving engine, then barrels into "I Like to Rock," a song that says everything it needs to in its title. "Roller" brings the swagger and the crowd noise, while a heavy, stretched-out take on King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" shows the band could twist prog into straight-ahead arena rock.
Deeper cuts from the late seventies sit alongside the radio favourites, and the night winds down with one of the early hits that helped make their name back home in Canada, a sweet coda to a loud evening.
It is raw, loud and gloriously unvarnished, the sound of a working rock band at its peak on an ordinary Thursday, and a welcome red-vinyl addition to any classic rock shelf.
