Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2 finds Aphex Twin swapping synthesisers for pianos, drums and percussion played by remote control, and the 2015 EP sounds every bit as strange and charming as that suggests.

Released on Warp just a few months after Syro ended his long album silence, this set picks up a thread first heard on Drukqs in 2001, where Richard D. James experimented with a computer-driven piano and mechanically triggered drums. Here he builds a whole record around the idea. Prepared piano, struck wood and metal, snare and hi-hat patterns all move with machine precision while sounding unmistakably physical, like a haunted workshop rattling into life.

"Diskhat1" sets the tone with clattering, intricate rhythms that seem to tumble over themselves. "Piano Un1 Arpej" is a brief, glistening miniature, while "Disk Prep Calrec2 Barn Dance" stretches out over four minutes of slow, interlocking patterns. The thirteen pieces range from fleeting sketches to longer workouts, so the EP plays like a notebook full of eccentric ideas.

It reached the top of the US dance and electronic albums chart, which says plenty about how devoted his audience is to even his most left-field moves.

For anyone fascinated by the man behind the machines, this is a curious and rewarding listen with a download card included.
