Collapse found Richard D. James in a gloriously restless mood in 2018, and this vinyl edition pairs four tracks on the record with a download card that adds the bonus cut "Pthex".

Arriving on Warp four years after Syro reintroduced Aphex Twin to the world, the EP was teased with a cryptic logo that appeared on posters in London, Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo before anyone knew what it meant. That sense of mischief runs through the music too. Weirdcore, the London designer behind the campaign, also made the dizzying video for the lead track, one so visually intense that a planned television broadcast was dropped after it failed a test for flashing imagery.

"T69 Collapse" is the headline, a tangle of breakbeats, warped melodies and sudden lurches in tempo that sounds like several tracks fighting for control and somehow reaching an agreement. "1st 44" rides a tougher, more insistent groove, while the B-side pushes further into dense, intricately programmed drums and slippery synth lines.

What stands out is how precise the chaos feels, with every glitch placed with real care.

For longtime fans, Collapse sits comfortably beside his classic 90s releases, and for newer listeners it is a sharp, compact way into one of electronic music's most singular minds.
