Anberlin begin a new chapter with CURRENCY, their ninth studio album and the first full-length with Matty Mullins on lead vocals, pressed here on red vinyl.
The Florida alt-rock band spent more than two decades building a devoted following on soaring choruses and introspective lyrics, and this record hands that legacy to a new voice. Mullins, who first sang on two songs from 2024's Vega, steps fully into the role here on a set that drew on previously unfinished material. The band co-produced it with Kellen McGregor of Memphis May Fire, keeping the sound big and the focus firmly on the songs.
Mullins has described the album as a story of what happens after your identity collapses, working through heartbreak, loss, addiction and shame before healing can begin. Neverafter, the lead single, sets the stakes, Gravity followed as the second taste, and Trenches brings in Switchfoot for a meeting of two veteran bands who are sharing stages this year. Ashes closes the record and brings the story to its end.
For longtime fans it is a bold reset, and for newcomers it is a strong place to start. The red pressing adds a fitting flash of colour to a record about burning things down and starting again.
