Altın Gün made their name plugging Turkish folk songs into psychedelic rock, and on Garip they hand an entire album to one of its great voices, Neşet Ertaş. This edition is pressed on blue vinyl.
Ertaş, who died in 2012, was a singer, lyricist and bağlama player who carried the ashik minstrel tradition into the modern era. Vocalist Erdinç Ecevit grew up with these songs, so the Amsterdam band's sixth album, released in 2026, plays like a homecoming for him as much as a tribute. All ten tracks are Ertaş compositions, reworked with little regard for how the originals sounded.
That freedom is the fun of it. Lush strings from the Stockholm Studio Orchestra sweep across several songs, saxophone and synth ballads creep in, and the arrangements borrow from Egyptian pop, Bollywood soundtracks and Turkish Arabesque. Opener "Neredesin Sen" sets the scene, the much-loved "Gönül Dağı" gets a thorough makeover, and "Niğde Bağları" and "Zülüf Dökülmüş Yüze" show how far the band can stretch a melody without losing its heart.
Ertaş's tunes stay at the centre throughout, sturdy enough to survive any costume change.
For longtime fans, it is the band's most eclectic turn yet, and a warm introduction to a folk master for anyone meeting him here first.
