Alphaville's Prostitute arrives as a remastered double vinyl pressing, giving the German synth-pop band's darkest, most theatrical album the room it always needed.
Released in 1994, five years after The Breathtaking Blue, it was produced by the band themselves at their Lunapark Studios in Berlin. Marian Gold and company had no interest in repeating Forever Young. Instead they made a sprawling, restless record that pulls in jazz shadings, club rhythms and art-rock drama, and it turned out to be the final Alphaville album to feature Ricky Echolette.
Fools opens the door with a bright, melancholy hook, while The Impossible Dream swells into a big, aching pop moment that deserved a far wider audience. Beethoven carries a stately grandeur, and the seven-minute Euphoria lets the band stretch out over shimmering electronics. Across sixteen tracks the mood keeps shifting, from tender ballads to abstract experiments, all held together by Gold's unmistakable voice.
Too abstract for the charts at the time, Prostitute has since become a favorite among listeners who prefer the band at their most adventurous. It rewards patience, revealing new details in the arrangements with every spin. Spread over four sides, it finally sounds as big and strange as it was meant to.
