Dark, catchy and gloriously gloomy, Good Mourning finds Alkaline Trio turning heartbreak and morbid humour into some of their most polished songs.

Released in 2003 as the Chicago band's fourth album, it was produced by Joe McGrath, with Jerry Finn co-producing and mixing. The bigger, cleaner sound gave the trade-off vocals of Matt Skiba and Dan Andriano more room to land, without sanding away the grim wit that had earned them such a devoted following in the first place.

We've Had Enough charges out of the gate with snarling urgency, while All on Black leans into the band's most theatrical, gothic instincts. Continental and This Could Be Love show off their gift for melodies that stick around long after the gloom has settled, the kind of choruses that sound best shouted back by a packed room.

Underneath the black-clad imagery sits a band with serious songwriting chops, balancing punk speed with a pop sense that rarely misses its mark. Every song feels lean and purposeful, and the record flows like a late night that never quite wants to end.

For fans of the early 2000s punk explosion, Good Mourning remains a high point, and this reissue gives it a well-earned return to the turntable.
